Region: Lake Ayarza, Santa Rosa, Guatemala

Ayarza is an area of great wonder, characterized by its extreme scenery and the brilliant turquoise waters of Laguna de Ayarza and Laguna Azul. This lake is believed to have been birthed by two colossal volcanoes, which tumbled and left a massive crater in their wake. The legends surrounding this lake are numerous and the bottom has never been found.

The region of Santa Rosa has the perfect amount of rainfall to produce coffee (1,600 - 2,000 mm/year), which conveniently falls mostly when the coffee needs it to grow.

Arnaldo López (56) is one of the many producers we work with at Ayarza cherry mill and has been involved in coffee production business his entire life. His father took him into the field to plant coffee trees as a child. Now Arnaldo has five children of his own and the cultivation of coffee has provided a platform for the family to grow and improve their quality of life. During the harvest the region is very dry. This gives the coffee a chance to ripen slowly on the tree and the farmers a chance to pick it with little threat from the rain.
