PURPOSE

Ammanford, our hometown in South West Wales, was built on anthracite coal 'Black Gold' that once fuelled lives and livelihoods. When the last colliery closed in 2003, Ammanford lost its sense of purpose. Coaltown set out to reignite that pride, creating a new kind of Black Gold: coffee. In 2018, the machines began to hum once more, not in the mines, but in our Roastery.

Our Inspiration

This is an image of founder Scott James's great-grandfather, Ben Addis (far left), captured in 1956. Ben dedicated his entire working life to the collieries surrounding Ammanford, starting from the tender age of 14. This photograph of Ben Addis is not just a family heirloom but a significant representation of a golden era in our history, a time when hard work and dedication were highly valued. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and industrious spirit that defined that period, something that holds the promise of making a return in the future. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
