At Coaltown Coffee Roasters, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, it’s included into everything we do, from the way we source our beans to how we design and choose the packaging that delivers our coffee into your hands. As a Certified B Corporation, we’re constantly striving to reduce our environmental impact and make choices that align with our values of people, planet and purpose. This B Corp Month, we wanted to share a little more about what makes our packaging sustainable and why we think every detail, even the material that holds your coffee, is an opportunity to do good.

Packaging plays a huge role in how products impact the planet. Coffee can’t reach you without protection on its journey from roastery to mug, but traditional single‑use plastics and materials that aren’t recyclable or compostable create unnecessary waste. That’s exactly why, as part of our sustainability commitment, we’ve put careful thought into every part of our packaging process.

We use fully recyclable bags and boxes for all our coffee. These bags are made from materials that can be collected and recycled into new products, rather than ending up in landfill. This choice supports a more circular system where things are reused over and over, helping to reduce waste overall. We also designed our bags with resealable closures and one‑way degassing valves, which help keep your coffee fresher for longer, reducing waste and ensuring great flavoured coffee.

If you love the convenience of coffee pods, we’ve got you covered too. All our specialty coffee pods are 100% plastic‑free and plant‑based, designed to break down naturally when composted at home or through your local food waste collection. This means you can enjoy barista‑quality espresso without contributing to millions of plastic and aluminium capsules going to landfill every minute, a small change that can make a big difference when enough of us take part.

Packaging sustainability doesn’t stop with coffee bags and pods. Across Coaltown, we make choices with the environment in mind:

• Our compostable cups come from a B Corp partner, meaning even the cups you take away from our café can be responsibly disposed of.
• Waste coffee chaff and grounds are donated to local gardening groups for composting, keeping nutrients in the soil instead of the bin.
• Every part of our roastery, from energy use to uniforms, has been reviewed with sustainability in mind, and we continually challenge ourselves to do better.

Being a Certified B Corporation is about continuous improvement, not perfection.
