Introducing: Academy Coffee

Spanning multiple locations across Wales, Academy Coffee has built a collection of cafés that feel connected without ever feeling uniform. Each space shares a clear identity, yet the experience gently shifts depending on where you are, shaped by its surroundings, the people passing through and the role it plays in the rhythm of the day.

In Cardiff, their new site at Platform sits within one of the city’s most exciting and evolving spaces. Set against the backdrop of a newly developed tram platform, there’s a steady, natural flow of commuters, visitors and locals moving through. It’s a café that suits both quick stops and longer pauses. Mornings lean into that pace, with espresso-based drinks, flat whites and takeaway coffees keeping things moving, while those with more time settle in with laptops or conversation. The wider Platform setting adds another layer, bringing together a range of food traders including Shark Bite Burgers, The Dough Thrower, The Italian Job and Llanfaes Dairy, alongside Academy’s own bar. The result is a well-balanced space where coffee sits comfortably within a broader, high-quality food offering.

Academy Whitchurch Road is their second but first site in Cardiff, which brings the full Academy experience with its signature atmosphere and warm, welcoming feel. Expect fully loaded avocado on toast to indulgent pancake stacks with bacon and maple syrup, it’s a relaxed, social spot, perfect for catching up with friends, enjoying a date or even bringing along your dog.

Further out, their Barry sites at Good Sheds offer a fun pace. There’s more space here, both physically and in atmosphere, making it somewhere you can take your time from The Sidings, Good Bar and 297. Whether it’s a relaxed coffee, a browse through what’s on offer, or attending one of their events, the experience feels open and community-focused. A thoughtful mix of food, drink and retail gives the space a wider sense of purpose, encouraging people to stay a little longer. At the same place, the addition of an on-site drive-thru 'Academy Junction', brings a practical balance, offering a quick and convenient option for commuters or those passing by who want the same quality coffee without needing to step inside.

Opposite Goodsheds holds their Academy Espresso Bar, situated in a wonderful grade II listed building, formerly a working Pumphouse that powered the Barry Dock gates at the once thriving dock yard. Alongside outstanding coffee, food and cocktails, the venue hosts live music sessions, craft workshops and private hire in its exclusive Underground basement bar.

Then there’s their presence within Albert Hall in Swansea, where Academy Coffee forms part of a larger food hall setting. This location carries a more social energy, lively, varied and well suited to spending time with others. With multiple food vendors and regular events, it’s a place that naturally lends itself to the city, whether you’re meeting friends, trying different food options or simply enjoying the atmosphere, with coffee remaining a constant throughout.

In Newport Market, the feel becomes more familiar and grounded. This is the kind of setting that fits easily into daily routines, where regulars return time and again. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with coffee at the centre, supporting slower conversations and unhurried moments throughout the day.

What remains consistent across every site is the care behind it all. Coffee, food and service are approached with quiet attention to detail and a clear sense of purpose. Nothing feels overcomplicated, just thoughtfully considered and confidently delivered.

There’s also a strong human element running through each location. The teams understand the pace and personality of their spaces and that shows in the way people are welcomed in. Service feels natural, friendly, helping each café feel like a genuine part of its surroundings.

While every location carries its own character, from the movement of Cardiff to the openness of Barry and the social energy of Newport and Swansea, the connection between them is always clear. It’s a shared approach built on consistency, care and an understanding of what makes a place feel good to spend time in. Together, they form a confident and considered presence across Wales. Not defined by a single flagship but by a group of cafés and bars that consistently do things well, wherever you find them. We’re proud to be Academy Coffees’ coffee partner and we’ve genuinely loved working with them so far. There’s something very natural about the way our values align, a focus on quality without overcomplicating, attention to detail without losing warmth and a belief that a café should feel as good as the coffee it serves.
